Werribee Mansion is in K Road Werribee. It was built in 1870s. It is huge, it has a
beautiful rose garden, an open range zoo and a lot of open space.
The Chirnside’s owned it. The Chirnside’s were very important people in Werribee.
Thomas and Andrew Chrinside to Australia from Scotland in the 1800s.
They had a motto it was a family motto
”Do or Die”,
Thomas and Andrew bulit Werribee Mansion and the beautiful surroundings.
It used to have 93,000 acres of formal gardens, believe it or not it has 60 rooms
and was built between 1874-1877. It was a private residence.
It was mainly self sufficient and had many people working there.
Thomas, Andrew & Mary Chirnside all lived in the mansion.
Thomas suffered ill health and depression shot himself in the
washouse in 1877, Andrew died in 1890 followed by his wife
Mary in 1908.
George Chirnside (Andrew & Marys Son)
Inherited the mansion.
George broke up the estate to enable the establishment of the
Werribee State Research Farm in 1912 and the
RAAF base at Point Cook in 1921 then sold the mansion to the
Jesuits in 1923. They used it as a seminary, making major
additions to the house in the 1920s and 1930s, including the tower.
The mansion and grounds were purchased by the Victorian government in 1973.
It is now on 10 ha and you can visit the Mansion ,
have a picnic in the gardens, learn all about the 19th century,
smell the beautiful flowers , visit the zoo and walk around inside as it is just awesome.
Oh I almost forgot you can stay at the Mansion too.
At the open range zoo you can take a Safari ride
where animals from the grasslands of Australia, Asia, and Africa live in conditions
as close as possible to their natural habitats.
If you take the Safari tour you will see
rhinos, giraffes and zebras and through exhibits like Meerkats, Cheetahs, Vervet Monkeys and Servalcats, rhinocerous, elephant and the hippopotamus.
There are Native Australian animals such as the koala and also the Eastern Grey kangaroo, Ringtail and Brushtail possums, the kookaburra and other native birds.
along the river you can see long-neck turtles, frogs, Platapus & Ibis.
